21ST CENTURY MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART - SANAA

First Year | Semester 1 | 2015

Enabling Skills -

Tutor: Mano Ponnambalam

THE BRIEF:

A case study of SANAA's 21st Museum of Contemporary Art, which identified the key design strategies which constitute its design.

THE SITE:

Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan

THE DESIGN:

SANAA's design encompasses three main concepts:

1. The Circle: As a unifying geometry, the circle reflects their intention to allow easy accessibility to the museum from all directions. It also sybolises the connection between the different sectors of society, being the relationship between the arts and commercial activity.

2. Transparency: The use of glass in the exterior facade and the interior demonstrates SANAA's desire for openness and enhances the connections between visitors inside and outside of the museum.

3. Horizontality: The museum's programme is spatially arranged laterally, allowing for an easy flow of movement for the visitors.
